Who is VeliMark?
In 2025, we had the privilege of helping the Finnish family-owned company VeliMark Oy develop its climate calculation. VeliMark Oy is Finland’s leading retail chain – a full-service wholesaler of professional cleaning, hygiene products and personal protective equipment.
Initial need in climate calculation
VeliMark is actively working on its sustainability work and had come a long way in the process of mapping its climate impact. In connection with this, challenges arose related to the climate calculation of purchased products and transports from suppliers.
Despite structured work, a number of emission factors were missing from the company’s climate calculation, mainly for purchased goods where suppliers could not provide sufficient data. VeliMark therefore needed help developing templates and assumptions to be able to include these elements – while maintaining high data quality.
Implementation
We were given access to the company’s article register and worked based on material types, typical manufacturing processes and emission factors per kilo. In cases where articles were specified per piece or package, we made conversions to kilos. We also developed standard calculations for transport from suppliers, based on reasonable shipping scenarios from each manufacturing country.
Results & next steps
Our work enabled Velimark to include large parts of the most significant sub-scope in their climate calculation – and thus avoid falling back on templates with lower reliability (e.g. financial key figures). The result gives them a more credible picture of climate impact and thus a better decision-making basis for designing their climate strategy and prioritizing the right efforts in the transition work.
