Development of climate tools

In 2022 and early 2023, PacsOn has developed a climate calculation tool to make it easier for their customers to see and measure the climate impact of products ordered. Hållbarhetsteamet was tasked with supporting the company during the development process.

About PacsOn

PacsOn offers complete solutions in packaging and consumables. PacsOn has six wholly owned subsidiaries, geographically located from Malmö in the south to Skellefteå in the north. Together, the various companies form a nationwide supplier of industrial packaging, hygiene and wiping paper, cleaning products, products for serving and catering, retail packaging, protective products and office supplies.

By streamlining and finding cost-effective products, logistics and warehousing solutions based on customer needs, PacsOn wants to help customers improve both their business and profitability

The need

PacsOn experienced that more and more of their customers began to ask questions about the carbon footprint of a particular item or product. By being able to report the climate impact per product/item, PacsOn saw an opportunity to create added value for its customers.

The ambition was to develop a tool through which customers can obtain information about the climate impact of goods they order, but also to enable customers to make comparisons between products.

The mission

In 2022, PacsOn has been working to design and develop a climate tool, and in early 2023 the tool was launched internally at the company. The project has involved several actors, including PacsOn itself, but also the consultant Drake Analytics.

Hållbarhetsteamet has acted as a sounding board in the development of the tool, and has supported issues related to delimitations, scope, simplifications, assumptions and scenarios in cases where emission factors were missing.

Furthermore, our Team has assisted in the development of emission factors that were later incorporated into the tool, and which will be reviewed and updated on an annual basis.

The result

PacsOn writes on the day of the launch of the tool

“Today we at PacsOn had an internal launch of our own developed CO2 tool […]. In the future, we will be able to deliver the same type of CO2 assessment as, for example, when you shop and pay with Klarna. The difference is that we will be able to analyze our customers’ purchases, benchmark items against each other to find CO2 savings and generate reports on the whole.

Going forward, the idea is to continue to develop the tool with more parameters and more detailed data to make sustainability data more accessible to customers. As PacsOn themselves put it “With more data we can make better and smarter decisions”.

Thanks to Hållbarhetsteamet’s fantastic network of consultants, we at PacsOn were able to get help from one of Sweden’s leading LCA experts. This has enabled us to develop a unique tool to help our customers control the CO2 impact of the products they buy from us.
